Winter Care Tips for Your New Home
Published: October 4, 2025
Winter is the season when your new home needs a little extra attention. Cold temperatures, freezing rain, and dry indoor air can all affect comfort and performance, so taking a few simple steps can help protect your investment all season long.
One of the most important tasks is preventing frozen pipes. Keep your thermostat at a steady temperature, disconnect outdoor hoses, and allow warm air to reach pipes under sinks. On very cold nights, letting faucets drip can help keep water moving and prevent freezing.
Your HVAC system works hard in the winter, so change your filters regularly and make sure your vents and returns stay clear. If you haven’t already, a seasonal HVAC checkup can improve efficiency and help avoid surprise repairs.
Indoor humidity also matters during the colder months. Aim to keep humidity between 30 and 45 percent. A humidifier can help if your home feels dry, while lowering humidity slightly can reduce window condensation.
Check your windows and doors for drafts as the home settles during its first year. Even small gaps in weatherstripping or caulking can affect comfort and raise energy costs. A quick adjustment often makes a noticeable difference.
It’s also important to keep gutters and downspouts free of leaves and debris. Clean gutters reduce the risk of ice dams, roof issues, and water pooling around the foundation.
Safety devices deserve extra attention in winter as well. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries to ensure everything is working properly, especially if you’re using fireplaces or additional heating sources.
Finally, take time to protect exterior features. Clear snow from decks and porches, avoid using salt on concrete surfaces, and keep an eye on exterior paint and caulking as temperatures fluctuate.
With just a little care and awareness, your new home will stay comfortable, efficient, and well-protected throughout the winter months.
